The responses, to date, from senior Irish politicians to the idea of a Media Violence Awareness Day have been interesting -

The issue has been raised with a total of seven TDs (members of the Irish Parliament). They represent both Government and Opposition Parties.

Formal written responses have been received from three Government Ministers who could be considered to have some responsibilities in the area.

From Tim O’Malley TD Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children

“This matter (awareness of violent death as entertainment) is more appropriate to the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources and I am forwarding your correspondence”

From Noel Dempsey TD Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources

“The national public service broadcaster, RTE , which is governed by the Broadcasting Authority Acts, is a statutory corporation independent in day to day matters, including programming content, in which I have no statuary function”

From the office of Mary Hanafin TD Minister of Education

"While the Department does not condone violence as entertainment, I feel that the delivery of Social,Personal and Health Education (SPHE) area of the curriculum in primary schools adaquately informs the child in this and other areas he/she may encounter as part of everyday life"

There was no answer provided to the question "Which Government Department is responsible for Media Awareness and Literacy"

Government backbenchers and opposition TDs declared an interest in the project, promising to raise the issue. Nothing has yet been seen.
